I am scheduled for a Breast MRI on the Wednesday before surgery. This procedure will allow the doctor to see if there is cancer is located anywhere else in my breasts prior to her doing the surgery. Okay I’m thinking MRI – no problem I’ll lay back and sleep in a tube. I’ve got this! No worries here.
Wrong! I’ve come to the conclusion that there is something with breast cancer and machines with holes in them. Being totally prepared to lay on my back to my surprise I’m told that I have to lay on my stomach with, you guessed it, my breasts through a hole. Patty (who has two boys and a girl in case you were wondering) gives me an IV and I proceed to lay face down with my breasts going through two holes. Thank God they fit! She tells me the procedure will take 25 minutes. I get earplugs and so it begins. I’m told to close my eyes and make up to do lists in my head. I try to do that but eventually go with the old stand by saying Our Fathers and Hail Mary’s. It’s amazing how one’s faith pops up in the unforeseen moments. I eventually start praying to the beat of the machine. Kind of a rap version of the Our Father and the Hail Mary. Whatever works! MRI completed, I’m told that I’ll get the results that day. True to form, Dr. Ruark calls. The news tips in my favor. No other cancer – whoop whoop! I finally feel like I can take a deep breath.
